This is one of the questions we are asked most, usually by someone who has seen one or two of the three and is wondering whether to try another. The honest answer is that the overlap is large and the differences are more about emphasis than about entirely separate skills.
What they have in common
All three are AHPRA-registered health professions with university degrees. All three assess and treat problems of the joints, muscles and nerves. All three can take a history, examine you, and recognise when something needs a doctor. A good practitioner in any of the three will listen, assess before treating, explain what they find, and refer on when they should.
Where the emphasis differs
Physiotherapists are trained broadly across rehabilitation, from musculoskeletal injuries to post-surgical recovery and neurological conditions. In private practice, physio tends to lean toward exercise-based rehabilitation and graded loading, with hands-on treatment as part of the mix.
Chiropractors focus on the spine and its relationship with the nervous system. Treatment centres on spinal adjustment or manipulation, often in shorter, more frequent visits.
Osteopaths work with the whole musculoskeletal system and how its parts affect one another. Treatment is hands-on and varied, mobilisation, soft tissue work, manipulation where appropriate, combined with exercise and advice. Appointments are typically longer, and osteopaths tend to spend more of the session on assessment and hands-on work.
These are generalisations, and individual practitioners vary more than the professions do.
Choosing for head, neck and jaw problems
For headaches, jaw pain, neck pain, dizziness and concussion, the profession matters less than whether the practitioner regularly treats those specific problems. The upper neck and the jaw are areas where general training is brief and where a lot of the assessment skill comes from practice and further study.
That is the reasoning behind North Coast Head Neck & Jaw Centre. We are osteopaths, but what distinguishes the practice is that we treat only head, neck and jaw conditions. If you have already seen a physio, chiro or another osteo for a headache or jaw problem without a clear answer, the difference you are likely to notice is not the profession but the depth of the assessment in those areas.
